The first comment I wrote, which I was unable to send you, also mentioned the idea of starting the lessons by spontaneous conversations. Make the student speak about his life, likes and hobbies (if any). Now, the aspect I consider as esential for communication is "fluency". It would be very important to make the student feel confident and relaxed, so as to be able to exploit most of his skills. The pronunciation skills required in this case would be restricted to a "comfortable intelligibility". Regarding the "usual way" I assume it is related to an intelligible way of asking and giving information. Or may be the most popular way of addressing to people in the city where this person would be travelling to? It should be necessary then, to make the student aware of the different ways of conveying the same meaning and also the differnent meanings conveyed by intonation.
Romina.
